From Lattes to Lions: My Cozy Morning and Zoo Adventure

When you’ve lived out of state for years, there’s something about visiting familiar places that just hits differently.

After 11 years away, moving back to Louisiana has been a bittersweet journey—there are moments of appreciation for being closer to family, but also a sense of detachment as I try to find my place again.

It’s funny how time and distance can make you see familiar people and places with what feels like foreign eyes. Have you ever experienced this? Was it strange? I digress.

Are any of you from Louisiana? Have you ever visited or plan to visit?

Alexandria, Louisiana, may not be on your must-see list, but if you’re ever passing through the state, you may just want to stop by. This trip was a reminder that sometimes the nicest little getaways are already in your own backyard.

Caffeinated and Happy at Le Bistreaux Coffee & Waffle Bar

I’m always on the lookout for cute and cozy brunch/breakfast spots, and I found just that with Le Bistreaux Coffee and Waffle Bar.

Like most mornings, I woke up wanting some good coffee and something comforting to eat, and this place did NOT disappoint.

Here’s why I’ll be returning to this spot again and again:

☕️ The Coffee: Smooth, rich, and absolutely perfect. Their vanilla-flavored latte? One of the best I’ve had in a long time.
🧇 The Waffles: Y’all, I’m not even a “waffle person,” but I might be converted! I ordered the Louisiana Mudd waffle—it’s a vanilla waffle covered with candied pecans, powdered sugar, cinnamon brown sugar, maple syrup, caramel, and whipped cream. It was light, crispy, and so so good.
🏡 The Atmosphere: Cozy, a bit quirky, (like me), and just the right amount of laid-back.

Le Bistreaux is one of those places I wish was down the street from my house. A place I could visit anytime I want a fancy waffle and some quiet time.

If you ever find yourself in Alexandria, do yourself a favor and go. Thank me later!

A Walk Down Memory Lane: The Alexandria Zoo

After all those breakfast calories (zero regrets!), I needed a place to walk it off. I hadn’t visited the Alexandria Zoo in years, so I decided I’d stop by and see how much had changed. What a pleasant surprise!

No, seriously, I think this place is such a hidden treasure. If you’re like me and love to visit popular zoos, you should definitely stop by. Or, if you’re from the area and just haven’t been in a while, maybe it’s time to go again.

Why the Alexandria Zoo is worth a visit:

🦁 Perfect Size: It’s just right. Not so big that you’re exhausted by the end, but not so small that you’re done in 10 minutes.
🐾 Animals Actually Out and About: You know how some zoos leave you staring at empty habitats like, “Did I just pay to see a patch of grass?” Not here! I saw a jaguar, monkeys, black bears—you name it!
🌳 Peaceful Atmosphere: Shady trees, a garden, little bridges, and a cute train ride that will take you around the park. I think the ticket was only $3. It’s a perfect place for families, couples, or even a solo adventure like mine.

I’ve got some pics and a video to show you from my day. Yeah, I know, not the best video. In my defense, I used my cell phone.

The Emotional Side of Being Back Home

Moving away gave me space to grow and explore, but coming back has brought its own lessons.

Reconnecting with old familiar places isn’t just about sightseeing—it was about reconnecting with a part of myself I hadn’t realized I left behind.

And sometimes, you need that nudge to balance who you’ve become with where you’ve been and what that looks like as you continue to grow and change.

If you know me at all, you know I’m a deep thinker.

Final Thoughts—Don’t Overlook the Hidden Gems Close to Home

A fun afternoon at the Alexandria Zoo, and a foodie experience at Le Bistreaux? Yes, ma’am, I’d do it again!

Sometimes, the best little getaways are right in your backyard. And if nothing else, I now have a new coffee and waffle spot to visit. 😉
