I have the best homemade hot chocolate recipe. Seriously, it’s like magic in a mug.
You know how sometimes you just want a warm, chocolaty hug in liquid form? Well, this is it.
Like many of you, I’ve loved hot chocolate (aka hot cocoa) ever since I was a kid, but it was usually Swiss Miss from a packet. But, at some point, I grew tired of the store-bought mix and decided to make my own.
Enter: homemade hot chocolate.
Now, this isn’t just any ole hot chocolate. It’s rich, smooth, and makes you feel like you’re sipping on a little cup of happiness. The best part? It’s really easy to make.
Let me show you.
The secret formula:
- 2 cups whole milk (I guess you could substitute with almond milk, but I won’t make any promises.)
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder (unsweetened—none of that sweetened stuff, trust me)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- A pinch of salt (YES, salt—it’s the secret of this recipe)
- 2 ounces of dark chocolate (chopped, and the darker, the better) (optional, but recommended)
- 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract (for that extra oomph)
How to make the best homemade hot chocolate:
- In a small saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and about 1/4 cup of the milk over medium heat. You’re making a smooth paste here—no clumps.
- Slowly pour in the rest of the milk, whisking thoroughly.
- Heat until really warm, but don’t let it boil.
- Once it’s hot enough, drop in the chopped chocolate and stir until it melts.
- Finish with the vanilla extract. Pour it into your favorite mug.
That’s it! I told you it was easy!
I’ve made this recipe so many times. I usually light a scented candle, grab a big blanket, and sip on it while working or watching a good movie.
You can also change it up to your liking. Add a dash of cinnamon, crushed peppermint, or even a shot of espresso for a mocha vibe. Feeling extra? Top it with whipped cream or my personal favorite, marshmallows.
Trust me when I say this hot chocolate will ruin you for anything less. I’m not saying you’ll never drink pre-packaged cocoa again, but it’ll be hard.
You may even find yourself side-eyeing those fancy coffee shop menus thinking, “Why am I paying $6 for something I can make better at home?”
What are you waiting for? Go grab your favorite mug!
You deserve a treat.
