Best Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe

Okay, friends, we need to talk. I have the best homemade hot chocolate recipe, and I’m convinced it’s magic in a mug.

You know how sometimes you just want a warm, chocolaty hug in liquid form? Well, this is it.

Like many of you, I’ve loved hot chocolate (aka hot cocoa) ever since I was a kid, but it was usually Swiss Miss from a packet.

At some point, I grew tired of the store-bought mix and decided to make my own.

Enter: homemade hot chocolate.

But listen, this isn’t just any hot chocolate. It’s rich, smooth, and makes you feel like you’re sipping a little cup of happiness.

Bonus? It’s really easy to make.

Here’s the secret formula:

  • 2 cups whole milk (I guess you could substitute with almond milk, but I won’t make any promises.)
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder (unsweetened—none of that sweetened stuff, trust me)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • A pinch of salt (YES, salt—it’s the secret of this recipe)
  • 2 ounces of dark chocolate (chopped, and the darker, the better) (optional, but recommended)
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract (for that extra oomph)

How to make the best homemade hot chocolate:

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and about 1/4 cup of the milk over medium heat. You’re making a smooth paste here—no clumps allowed.
  2. Slowly pour in the rest of the milk, whisking thoroughly.
  3. Heat until really warm, but don’t let it boil.
  4. Once it’s hot enough, drop in the chopped chocolate and stir until it melts.
  5. Finish with the vanilla extract. Pour it into your favorite mug.

That’s it! I told you it was easy!

I’ve made this recipe many times this season. I usually light a scented candle, grab a big blanket, and sip on it while working or watching a good movie.

The best part? You can change it up to your liking. Add a dash of cinnamon, crushed peppermint, or even a shot of espresso for a mocha vibe. Feeling extra? Top it with whipped cream or my personal favorite, marshmallows.

Trust me when I say this hot chocolate will ruin you for anything less. I’m not saying you’ll never drink the pre-packaged stuff again, but it’ll be difficult. You may even find yourself side-eyeing those fancy coffee shop menus thinking, “Why am I paying $6 for something I can make better at home?”

So, go grab your favorite mug and treat yourself. Because, honey, you deserve a little treat.

Enjoy!
